The Star 17/7/08: PAS has no qualms about holding muzakarah (dialogue) with Umno but will not leave the Pakatan Rakyat coalition, its vice-president Mohamad Sabu said.
“There is no problem holding talks. We can talk. We can discuss. But we are not going to leave the Pakatan,” he said after witnessing the ePerolehan launching ceremony at Komtar Thursday.
He was responding to comments made by PAS and Umno on holding talks to discuss issues affecting the Malays.
PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang was quoted in Harakah Daily as saying that they could hold such dialogues with Umno.
Umno president Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi welcomed the proposal while his deputy Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said no conditions should be imposed if such dialogues were to be held.
In Ipoh, Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin said he also supported any talks by Umno and PAS on condition that Umno abandoned its racial stance.
“I am open to the talks for I am close to most of the Umno leaders but not in terms of party-to-party.
“However, as good Muslims, we must not centre on which is race A or race B; we are not allowed to do this.
“We have to look at things on a wider perspective,” he told reporters after receiving zakat payment from Pos Malaysia Bhd Perak branch here.
He disagreed with Najib that no conditions should be set for the talks.
“Of course there has to be conditions; the talks have to be done without the element of race if we want peace in the community.
“After all, there are conditions for everything; even for marriage,” he added.
Nizar said that since Umno’s constitution was race-centred, the talks could be held by party members as “individuals”.
