The Star (16/8/08): Pasir Mas MP Datuk Paduka Ibrahim Ali has criticised PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang’s opening address at the muktamar for being too general and lacking direction.
He said the speech lacked the punch that could galvanise the Islamist party to strengthen its position in the new political landscape.
Ibrahim, who is a strategic ally of PAS and the sole Independent MP, expressed disappointment that Abdul Hadi did not press for a review of fuel prices despite global prices having dropped significantly.
Abdul Hadi should have touched on the worries that certain types of Umno “culture” were starting to creep into PAS, Ibrahim said on the sidelines of the three-day muktamar at Stadium Indera Mulia.
“There is no strong self-criticism within the party to warn members that they risk going down the same road as Umno,” he said.
He claimed some PAS members were becoming greedy, jostling for timber concession projects and some were even lobbying for Datukships.
PAS vice-president Datuk Husam Musa described Abdul Hadi’s keynote opening address as one that should end the confusion about the party’s political role following uncertainty during the polemic debate about the PAS-Umno muzakarah (dialogues).
Perak DAP chairman Datuk Ngeh Koo Ham said it was a good speech, adding that the DAP has become “seasoned” with PAS as it has worked with the Islamist party since 1999.
