The Star (25/8/08): Another former senior Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) leader claimed he has received death threats for exposing PKR adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s misdeeds and has been told to leave Permatang Pauh.
After Anwar’s former tennis sparring partner Datuk S. Nallakaruppan claimed he had received threatening messages, former PKR Youth chief Ezam Mohd Noor said he was the target of the same, including death threats, via SMS.
Met after a ceramah here on Saturday night, Ezam said he had been receiving such threats since he arrived in Permatang Pauh and the number increased in the last couple of days. “The messages included threatening to kill me, my mother, and my wife and children,” he said.
However, he said, he was ignoring these threats which had also not dampened his spirit to help the Barisan Nasional by-election machinery.
“I will remain in Permatang Pauh until Aug 26. Such threats have no impact on me.”
Ezam said he had not reported the threats to police and left it to Allah to protect him.
He said he expected such things to happen as Permatang Pauh was Anwar’s stronghold and the residents’ sentiments and sympathies were for Anwar.
“As a former senior right-hand man of Anwar in the PKR, I am asking Permatang Pauh voters to instead discard such sentiments for the sake of the country, race and religion.
“I was with Anwar for a long time. No family suffered more than his or mine did. Indeed it was not easy for me to forget what I had fought for but when I realised Anwar had deviated from the path, I decided to leave for the love of my religion, race and country,” he said.
Ezam said voters needed to place the interests of the nation, race and religion before that of the individual they supported.
